The Big Flip
August 26, 2013

My best friend – the one I met while dying my hair red in the freshman dormitory bathroom – is part of an exciting and important project, one that my family proudly supports: A documentary that explores the triumphs and struggles of families where the wife wins the bread and the husband mans the home. The Big Flip.

The project has three days left to meet it’s fundraising goal. And, holy smokes, they are close! In fact, if each of my readers gave $10 we’d seal this deal. Will you please take the time to watch this video, share with your people and join in supporting The Big Flip if you can?

TEN REASONS YOU SHOULD SUPPORT THE BIG FLIP

10. Because you believe women should be able to lean into work without sacrificing family

Half of Americans still think that the increase of women in the work force has made it harder for marriages to succeed, and a majority still feel that kids are better off with mom at home instead of at work. In the face of such social pressures, it’s no wonder a woman is less happy and divorce is higher when she is the breadwinner. Join us in changing these misguided notions about working women and Big Flip families.

9. Because you believe men should be able to lean into family and fatherhood with pride and joy.

Today, men are often judged negatively when they’re not the one bringing in the bacon. No wonder husbands are 61% less happy when their wives are breadwinners. Stand with us in celebrating at-home dads and husbands who are key to their wives’ and families’ successes.

8. Because you’re ready for an exciting new icon of the modern dad to replace Mr. Mom.

Popular culture like to portray a man with his kids as either a bumbling idiot, or an unattractive Mr. Mom. No wonder only 8% of Americans agree that kids are better off with dad at home than at work! Help us reverse these misperceptions.

7. Because you want to be a leader, not a follower, in understanding this change in American families.

Moms are breadwinners in 40% of American families in 2013—and the numbers are predicted to keep rising. This is not just a short-term anomaly—but a long-term trend that will soon tip to become the new normal. Join us in leading the charge in understanding this change, and helping steer it in a positive direction.

6. Because you’ll be a part of a creative project that “promises to be an imaginative contribution to the media arts field.”

That’s what the San Francisco Film Society believes The Big Flip will be. Join them in supporting us!

5. Because The Big Flip is a non-commercial project where funds will be spent on making the film better, and NOT for profit.

That’s another guarantee our funders get because we are officially sponsored by the San Francisco Film Society—our work has to be non-commercial in nature, and SFFS will be monitoring our budget to make sure we’re using funds in a fiscally responsible manner.

4. Because you believe in the filmmakers and want to help them succeed!

You’re getting this email either because you’re a friend of one of the filmmakers or you care about the project—or both! Help us make our Kickstarter a success so we can continue our work without delay.

3. Because the stories of our Big Flip families will touch you, teach you, inspire you, and change you.

We scouted long and hard across the U.S. to find this richly diverse and inspiring range of Big Flip families to open up their homes, and share their Big Flip journeys with us. Help us finish capturing their stories.

2. Because the Big Flip affects you too, whether you live it directly or not.

As The Big Flip becomes the new normal, we’re all going to be affected by it. The men, women and children of the Big Flip will be our co-workers, our customers, our leaders and employees. Singles dating someone from the opposite sex will learn that changing expectations around gender roles affect the dating scene as much as marriages and families. Parents—your daughter could likely grow up to be the one supporting her family, and your son might very well have to man the home-front at some point in his life. So creating a world where Big Flip families can thrive and be happy will end up benefiting all of us.

1. Because you want children to thrive, families to be happy, and love to endure.

Right now, Big Flip families face unique challenges that other families don’t. Husbands and wives are less happy with their family life when the wife is the breadwinner. Divorce is 40% more likely than in traditional marriages. Help us defy these numbers and find out what it takes for love to endure in The Big Flip.

For the filmmakers, the Big Flip is more than just a documentary. It’s a personal quest. I am incredibly moved by this piece. Believe in family, believe in love:

ps a little extra incentive: give and leave a comment over here saying you did. I’ll randomly select a winner to receive a jar of Montana Peach Butter.
