Rainbow Friday > giving away and giving back
November 28, 2014

Last year we inaugurated Rainbow Friday, a way to bring color and connection to the spirited days of shopping after Thanksgiving. This year is even better with every small, sustainable business not only offering a giveaway and great deal but also giving to a non-profit organization of their choosing.

I am blown away by the talent and big-heartedness of every business participating. This is your opportunity to shop; to vote for your neighbors with the purchase of unique, handmade gifts; to use your purchase power to lean in and give back.

I hope you will support their efforts and do some shopping this weekend!

* Each business is giving away an item. Leave a comment for a chance to win. Comments close on Monday, December 1 at 11:59pm. There will be 12 winners, announced here on Tuesday, December 2.

WINNERS!!! Congrats all; check your email for details.

  1. café apron from GEO: #4 Tricia A.
  2. garden calendar from Natalie Creates: #16 Jenn
  3. art from Little Green Things: #100 Colleen
  4. Hattie Rex necklace from tart: #36 Kat
  5. arrow notecards from Noteworthy: #59 Amy
  6. earrings from Lava Lake: #113 Rachael
  7. bonnet from Urban Baby Bonnets: #141 Jessica
  8. two headbands from b. handmade designs: #98 Linda J
  9. set of four bowls and salad bowl from Dharma Door: #42 Ashley Smith
  10. moccasins from Starry Knight Design: #8 Karin
  11. six cupcakes from Fairy Food Market: #33 Sarah Holden
  12. library tote from Small Town Goods: #122 Yana

* Rainbow Friday deals run from Friday, November 28 – Monday, December 1.

* I will post the amount each business is donating to their chosen organizations on instagram and facebook next week. Let’s make it impressive!

My heart is heavy for you and your family. The love of a dog is like no other. Steadfast and unconditional. She will, no doubt, be by your side during your future runs. My Christmas wish is that all the dogs at the Humane Society of Western Montana should find a home as lovely as Alice, and live a life as long and rich.

I’ve been thinking about your family’s loss of Alice for the past week. You gave her such a wonderful life. She reminds me so much of our boy, Darwin, who is 11 this year. He’s slowing down a little (which is to say, he now acts like he’s about 5), and it kills me to think he won’t be with our family forever. Sending love to you and your beautiful family.

I am so very sorry about the loss of your sweet Alice. What a wonderful and amazing companion and family member she has been. I am so thankful there are people like you in the world who value the lives of these amazing animals and provide them with more than just a place to sleep and food to eat. She truly was a part of your family. We have lost two of our furry family members this year – Hannah who was 16 and Copper who was 14. I miss them every single day. To honor them, we adopted another rescue from our local animal shelter (which sadly is not a no-kill shelter). I hope when the time is right, Alice will lead another wonderful companion into your lives.
With heartfelt sympathy to all of you,
Michelle

I’m very sorry for you and your family, which must feel greatly diminished just now. Thinking of you and so very, very sorry for your loss.

I lost my sweet Pug a year ago in October, and it still hurts. I like to think of Alistair welcoming the pets and family members of those I love. Maybe he and Alice are snuggling right now…

So sorry and shocked to hear about Alice. Loved reading about the happiness she clearly added to your lives. An awesome idea to give back from whence she came..my order is in:)
Next time you are out for a run think of her beside you (if it doesn’t hurt too much) and about all the fun adventures you and she had! She was blessed to have you as her mom for the all too short time she was here!

I’ve read your posts off and on for a couple of years now and have always love your inclusion of Alice in your stories about family, love, and change. My dog is also 11 and has slowed down so incredibly much in the last year. I am sorry for your loss but know your family will always hold her dear in your hearts.

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. Our dogs (& cats) become such a good part of our lives. We lost 2 to old age and disease this summer, and looking back at the photos we’d taken over the years helped us. Alice knew your family’s love just as you knew hers. Thank you for the giveaways.

I’m so sorry about Alice. We lost our beloved cat this past May. He was my constant companion for 14 years, and I don’t think I have ever cried so much in my life. I’m sure she knew how much she was loved!

I was so sorry to hear about your loss. I admire you and always enjoy reading your blog posts. I was devastated for your and your family when I heard that Alice was no longer with you. I got my first dog at the age of 35 and I cannot imagine not having him in my life. May you cherish your memories of your sweet Alice.

Wow…so cool to see all these local businesses! I’m proud to say I’ve purchased gifts from so many of them (Tart is my go-to store here in Bozeman for gifts!!)
Also, sorry to hear about Alice. Our dog is coming on her 11th year and we are grateful for each day we have with her…
Love the Rainbow Friday!!!

Nici sorry to hear about your pup. I’ve read your blog for a while now and am amazed at the garden you can craft…I also live in Missoula and am far from a green thumb so your greens elicit envy!

Additionally, because of your “directions” on how to make soup from scratch I can confidently say I am getting pretty damn good at not letting things go to waste! My mom hates to cook so never passed any culinary skill my way- those directions were a great way to help an amateur get started. Thank you!

So, so sad for you and your family. Our own family said goodbye to our husky as she neared 16, my heart knows the ache and sorrow. May your memories always be strong of Alice, and as my daughter says… ‘Mom, she’s still running by us, it’s just her spirit now.’

nici, I’m so sorry to hear that alice is gone. thank you so much for sharing her with all of us. I loved her thru your pictures and words for years. one favorite pic that comes to mind was sweet alice in the snow, a perfect snowflake on her dark furry head. 🙂 and that last pic of her running, smiling, through that golden sunlit field…perfection. tears for your loss, friend.
