I am always hopeful for an early spring. I do love our Montana winters but some time in late February the poo brown, schlopy wetness starts to fry my will. Especially this year when I am not out on epic ski adventures.
I ordered my seeds and they came and I arranged to borrow a corner in my friend’s greenhouse. I plan to start my seeds this weekend. I am getting chickens in two weeks and I think I guilted, ahem talked, my man into helping with the hen castle.
I have been poking at the bare earth and feeling like I could perhaps wedge some pea seeds down in there….but then this morning, I woke up to a beautiful and serene world that shattered my dreams of green lushness. There was an exhibit at MAM a few years back by a Swedish artist, Gerd Aurell, called Montana is a Harsh Mistress. Yup.
I mean, it is March and I do live in Montana. And I know I am being dramatic because this was hardly a *storm*. But still. This girl is ready for the sun rising early and setting late, jumping in a river and momentarily losing her breath to the glacial cold, flip flops, earthworms and freckles.

Hey there !
Here in south eastern Ontario we are in the same “boat” .. I’m so sick of frigging snow and winter storm alerts .. if I could DRINK … by cracker crumbs I WOULD !!!! LOL
Yup … time for SPRING !
Joy
I hear you Burb, I jumped out of bed this morning and found at least 8″ of the white stuff. I drove to work; skidding all the way up the mountain. As I walked from my car to my office, watching my boots slide through almost 15″ of the white stuff, I was thinking that only one week ago we were watching our bare feet slide through white stuff of another matter…..sand at “Margot” Island!
I have been bitten by the Sunbug, bring it on!
xoxo, Mom
Hi! I think I have visited your blog before…came by today from Blotanical. I am on the other side of the mountains from you, in Idaho. Our snow is gone and spring is in the air. I love our protected zone 6b here in the river valley!
Joy: I do recommend drinking to cure the springzies.
Mom: RL always has such a late start! You will have longer more fruitful harvest in MN. Geez 15 inches?!
Connie: Oh I would love to be in 6b!! I am surprised you are in that zone. Thanks for visiting.
It’s especially galling when fresh from the warm air, coastal breezes and humidity of Florida laid-backed-ness. I pined for a good week after we got back from Little Gasp. I cannot even feature spring, much less summer.
And we are never getting into our new house. I will never have a garden again.
Hi! I found your blog through Blotanical, and I’ve really enjoyed my visit. I’m sure you are tired of winter by now. I know I am, and I live way south of you.~~Dee
Yay, chickens! I will have to live vicariously through you for awhile, until we figure out the permit and house thing.
And last weekend, the high on Saturday was close to 80 (!) and we had snow the next day. I feel your pain.
