the chickens run
May 7, 2008

The run is done! Thanks to my fabulous man. Andy installed this brilliant sliding door and a bomb-proof run that can be picked up and moved around the yard, tractor style.

Olive is obsessed with the chickens. She spends her days waiting for them to walk in and out. She is in pure heaven and will always think that just maybe if there is an earthquake and the run moves to the left like six inches and just one chicken survived…I could squeeze between the 2x2s and…I better not move from this place just in case that happens.

And, of course, bug is super cute juxtaposed with the coop. She’s my chicken too.

That came out so great that I *almost* want one for myself. I will, however, be living vicariously here on your blog.

Awaiting updates on Olive’s ingenuity ๐Ÿ˜‰

Very efficient & charming! I may want to sleep in the “Love Coop” when I come to visit.

Andy did an insane job on that coop!! They are trio of lucky little cluckers. And Olive, she has new toys. Who needs anything more than this for entertainment. Who’s that on the blancket? XOXOX

The whole thing came out awesome! Makes me want chickens too, but I already have 5 rabbits so I don’t know if I want to add on to my daily chores or not.

The coop is fabulous. And what a great idea on the run. I so want chickens. I’m writing a story on families with chickens in the city and each day tell the hubby how great they are. With 2 dogs, 2 cats and a baby, he’s a firm “NO”

Wow, that’s a fancy coop! I was wondering if they’d get an outside area ๐Ÿ™‚
Hopefully Olive won’t give them heartattacks!!

Okay, but what do the chickens think?

That one chicken is dancing for crying out loud, Patia, she is so happy in Cluckville.

hahaha, Olive’s so funny!

i wish my house was that stable. and if it had an outside run for the girls – i could keep them safe from predators.
hmmmmmm…
is your husband available for rent – i need one of those for out my back door?

wow so amazing!!!
i’ve been meaning to ask you – this is kind of a weird question, but if anyone has looked into it i figure you have. do you know whether female chickens have any sort of “anxiety” when they lay an egg (even if it’s not fertilized), and it’s then removed from their “nest” ? In other words, will they realize, and be sad, when you take their eggs? if not, i might have to eat one when i come to visit ๐Ÿ™‚

Sarah, if a hen is “setting,” she may be defensive of her nest. But most of the time, they lay an egg and then wander off to find something to eat. Remember, chickens have brains the size of a pea.

Nici, I saw this film mentioned in the NY Times today and thought of you: โ€œPoultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.”

Congrats on your coop and run! They both look great and the girls look happy! My coop is being built this weekend…a mother’s day gift. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, that is so fantastic! If (when) I had chickens I’d be writing you every day asking for instructions to build that thing (or at least the ingenious sliding door part of it).

Congratulations!

To all those considering chickens: they are seriously way easier than I thought. I told my man they were very easy but that was just so he’d be on my side with the purchase. Turns out, they are really easy. Getting the girls all set up was the challenging part but now we just sit back and enjoy the eggs.

Sarah, my sweet vegan friend, I will look in to chicken anxiety. I don’t think they even care after it is laid, as Patia said. And, I think the chickens love their new digs. Why, I’d wager to say that they would click their chicken heels if they could.
