It’s a new year and a big life change for me: now a mama of two, I am not returning to my job as the Missoula Art Museum’s Development and Membership Director (but I am a member and you should be too! I’ll never stop advocating for that amazing organization). I’ll be at home with my girls and working on some projects that will unfold right here on dig…
Right now, Andy just left for work in the dark dark morning and as I type, Ruby is nursing and my screen is split so Margot can watch youtube videos of the abc’s. It’s a whole different world of distractions and beauty. Here we go.
I am really excited to announce that, starting today, I have a weekly column on mamalode called mama digs! (Oh and this reminds me that my essay in the recent print magazine, In Pursuit of Life, is now online as well. Pages 40-43.)
My first mama digs column is Ruby’s birth story. My cousin who is more like my sister, Elise, remarked that, really, Ruby has two births: November 23 and December 15. True.
Ruby’s unexpected stay in the hospital pushed her birthday into distant memory. But it wasn’t that long ago and a day worth celebrating even more now. Girlfriend needs her birth story written… Click here to read the rest of this essay at mamalode.com

Wow. I love a birth story. And yours, well, yours was so extraordinarily written. It brought me to tears.
Thank you so much for sharing it.
Brought me to tears as well. What a beautiful birth story. So glad she is home and continuing to thrive. And you, too. xoxo
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing Ruby Jane’s story – and yours.
I’ve been a reader of your blog for the last two years, and have shyly never left a comment. I think it is due time that I thank you for your inspiring words, your humor, your grace, and your amazingly told stories. My day always gets a little better when you let us into your world! Thanks.
Nici, I finally read your article “In pursuit of life”. I love love loved it! I can’t say that I have had as broad and true a perspective as you have had during your pregnancy and toddler years with margot, but I think deep down, the last 4 years I have been grappling with the same things. Searching for the same answers. It touched me so your words, and gave me such hope that I too am following a path that will bring me peace and happiness. Even if it is often times foggy and icy and feels like I am not going anywhere. Thanks. xoxo
The story. Wow. The story.
I have no words other than, thanks.
Thanks for sharing that in such frank and beautiful detail.
Loves. Big old loves to you all.
Beautiful Nici! You inspire me to actually believe that I can do it again. Thanks for sharing your experience with the world.
I power read this, I bet I passed the test of most words read per minute while achieving 100% comprehension! Then I reread it slowly, savoring every word. Quite simply…..the birth of a child is a miracle, especially to the one pushing it into the world. AND and added “especially” when the one doing the pushing is one I too loving pushed into the world.
So well said Nici.
Welcome little Ruby Jane, we are here to love you!
You can really write woman. God bless ya.
A beautiful story, beautifully written (as always). Bug really did enjoy having a swimming pool in the dining room. A swim and a nap was the perfect bridge from “No Sister Born” to “Hi, Sister Born Cutie-Pie”.
oh how i love me a good birth story. thank you so very much for sharing. the miracle of life, just love it!!
and thanks for the e-mail, it was much appreciated,
april
Lovely. Congratulations on your new adventure writing for Mamalode. This just seems so natural for you. You write about life and things beautifully and eloquently. This seems like a very natural progression. 🙂 Look forward to your articles! M.
what a beautiful story …
it always feels so good to tell these stories of birth, doesn’t it?
thanks for sharing 🙂 Very inspirational!
Love, love, love a good birth story! Thank you!
This is an amazing story – although I have to confess my favorite part is “And the nice man fetched me some spackling.”
Beautiful birth story, so pleased you took the time to write and publish it after all of Ruby’s struggles with RSV. She truly does have two birthdays!
Happy to hear that you’ll be writing weekly on MamaLode! Throughly enjoy your blog.
This story had me on the edge of my seat as did Margot’s story. Once again you have shown your writing skills beautifully. Yes the birth of Ruby Jane has changed all of our lives. She is indeed a gift to us all. Love you and the whole family. XOXO J
You are amazing. Thank you for sharing this Nici. Fifth photo down.. what a powerful image that is. I am so glad you continue to write and have all these things going on that use your talent.
I’ve always loved reading birth stories from the mother’s perspective. I wonder what Andy would write? or even myself since I was playing a different role.
You write with such beauty. You missed your calling!
Beautiful and amazing. Birth is such a powerful and humbling experience. I’m so glad your Ruby Jane is home safe with you and your family. I love to read your writing and waited with baited breath until you told us all she was well and home.
Thanks for sharing!
Unh! Lovely. I love the intimate details of your heart and mind during your birth. And I love the line about her smelling like a new promise. Yes!

When you think of Hogan scarpe , what is the first thing that comes to mind? That’s right, you are probably thinking about sports apparel. That is because Hogan scarpe donna has done a very good job of promoting its brand. We often seen sports celebrities, sponsored by hogan donna , performing on national sports events and displaying the Hogan scarpe uomo logo prominently on their sports wear.
